A new, full length trailer for JJ Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek sequel was released today.  Check it out, its embedded below.

AWESOME.  Spaceships, explosions, an epic narration by the always-great Benedict Cumberbatch (John Harrison, the villain who many suspect to either be Kahn, Gary Mitchell or some sort of combination of the two) and lots of jumping off of things!  The trailer does a great job of highlighting the darker tone of the movie and an overall theme of redemption for Kirk.

Also, hidden in the trailer is a website URL, http://www.areyouthe1701.com/ which lets you sign up to participate in what will surely be another entertaining viral marketing campaign that so many sci-fi movies run these days.  Quick note, remember that 1701 is the registration number for the USS Enterprise.

What do you think of the trailer?

It’s finally here!  Check out the first trailer for the upcoming Star Trek movie!

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for the next Star Trek movie.  I know many Trekkies are not huge fans of the JJ Abrams reboot but at least its something.  It is currently the only major space-based movie franchise still running so I’ll support it.  With that being said, below is the first poster for the movie.

I was expecting something more sci-fi-ish but it still looks like this movie is really going to bring the federation to its knees.  It looks to be Benedict Cumberbatch (Gary Mitchell in the film?) standing on top of that heap of rubble.  Soon we will get a better look at the film with an extended trailer being linked to the new Hobbit movie coming out soon.  Here is the synopsis of the film:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

While we wait patiently for a new Star Trek series to be made (hopefully after JJ Abrams next Trek movie comes out next year), Star Trek fans have brought it upon themselves to return to the universe with Star Trek Secret Voyage, a fan made Trek web series “developed by and for classic Star Trek enthusiasts.”  The first episode is embedded below!

Though obviously its not up to par with professionally made programs, it still looks pretty well made for a web series (not to mention long running in at 40:04) and is definitely worth a watch if you crave some new Star Trek!  Hopefully more STSV is on the way!

Enjoy!

New Star Trek 2 Villain Revealed!

The villain of Star Trek 2 has long been in question since Simon Pegg denied that Benedict Cumberbatch was playing Khan.  Now co-star Karl Urban (Bones) has let it slip to SFX that the villain is actually Gary Mitchell (oooh sounds evil).  He said,

“[Cumberbatch is] awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”

Mitchell appeared in Star Trek: The Original Series as a crewmember of the Enterprise and close friend of Kirk who gains special powers after encountering the Galactic Barrier’s energies, only to become a serious threat to the Enterprise.  That should be interesting and I think a much better idea than rehashing the well known Khan story.

Star Trek 2 comes out in 2013.
