I’ve mentioned several times in the past that the current tv ratings system is flawed.  I figured I’d expand on that with a quick explanation.  Basically, Nielsen is a company that monitors tv shows based on number of viewers.  But the TOTAL amount of viewers is not exactly what matters.  What DOES matter (at least for major networks like FOX, CBS, NBC and so on) is the number of viewers in the key demographic range of 18-49 because those people are most likely to buy the products they see in the commercials between shows.  For example, though Harry’s Law had a great total audience number, it’s 18-49 rating was very low as the show had a much older audience.  It was cancelled earlier this year after 2 seasons.

But the problem with Nielsen system is that the tv viewing habits have evolved considerably in the last decade with the growth of the internet.  This can help explain why there is so little sci-fi out there these days on tv.  Most sci-fi fans are fairly tech-savvy and this often means that they are more likely to record their favourite shows and watch them a day or week later, stream them online (through legal or illegal sources) or even torrent them.  All of these methods of watching the show do not count for much of anything because they aren’t a live tv audience who is forced to sit through the commercials that fuel the industry.

For example, in the letters to Netflix and MGM that were posted yesterday as part of the Save Stargate Universe letter writing campaign, they mention that SGU has great DVR ratings and was one of the top torrented shows while on the air.  That shows that though there was definitely an audience for the show, they were watching it in a way that just happens to not make Syfy or MGM money.  That is why Netflix is a great option for serialized genre shows that people often like to watch all together like a 22 hour movie and not once a week for a year because they don’t care what you are watching and when you do it, as long as you pay for a subscription.

In conclusion, the Nielson system is flawed and outdated.  They have to start including online viewing into their ratings totals because the consumer’s habits are evolving and Nielson is stuck in the past of “appointment-based” viewing.  We are now in the on-demand era and they need to adapt.

Also, yesterday, news broke that Nielsen is also rigged as apparently they are “manipulating viewership data in favor of channels that are willing to provide bribes to its officials.”  No surprise there…  You can read about that story here:  http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/nielsen-sued-billions-manipulated-ratings-355829

Any questions?

As you have probably already noticed, Netflix is getting into the business of bringing shows with cult followings back from the grave.  First they made a deal to bring back the hilarious Arrested Development, then got into talks to save FOX’s Terra Nova and ABC’s The River (though both have fallen through).  Now, they are in talks to save CBS’s much loved post-apocalyptic drama, Jericho.  With it seeming more and more that Netflix is sci-fi fan’s best chance at seeing some great shows return to TV, I though I would give them a hand.  Here is a list of the top shows that Netflix should look at reviving (after Jericho of course).  Reed Hastings, if you’re reading this, take note!

1. Firefly (FOX, 2002)

Obviously this gets top spot!  Everyone who has watched this show loves it (if they don’t they are wrong) and its fanbase has exploded in size since it finished it’s too-short run on TV.   The show also averaged around close to a 3 on the Nielson scale when it aired which by today’s standards it actually pretty decent (close to what Nathan Fillion’s Castle gets).  Joss Whedon has become a household name with the amazing success of The Avengers too and has said that he would love to one day return to the ‘Verse.  But when would this show take place?  Before the pilot?  That could work.  Between the series and film, Serenity?  There is good amount of time between the two that a series could be set in.  It could be set after the movie but some fans may not be happy with Firefly returning without a few special characters.  One more option would be to forget the movie ever happened and just continue the show the way Joss originally intended.  I’d be up for any of them, I just want Firefly back!  If you haven’t seen this show yet, drop what you are doing and go watch it (DVD, Netflix etc.)!  It will become an instant favorite!

2. Stargate Universe (Syfy, 2009-2011)

Cancelled prematurely by Syfy and recently nominated for 8 Constellation Awards, SGU was really finding its voice and becoming a truly great show when it ended.  Yes, I’ll admit the first season was pretty rocky, full of highs and lows (mostly lows) for the show but its second season was exceptional.  And of course, they ended it (along with the franchise) on a cliffhanger!  It deserves much better and damn it, I want to know what happened to Eli!  Yes, there is some pretty great fan fiction out there to end the show but I really want to see the show ended the way that its creators intended.  This IS possible, as David Hewlett (Dr. Rodney McKay of Stargate Atlantis) bought much of the sets so its really all a matter of getting the cast and crew back together.  Netflix, make this happen, even if its just a mini-series or movie!

3. Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome (Syfy, ????)

This one is a bit different as it hasn’t even aired yet.  And it may not.  Despite an awesome, kick-ass trailer being leaked and making many aware of Blood and Chrome in the first place, Syfy decided to demote the show to a web-series, which now may not even happen.  Blood and Chrome would focus on a young Will Adama during the first Cylon war which sounds awesome!  Not sure why Syfy is so afraid of going with this (budget reasons? worried it might fail like Caprica did?) but I’m sure it would be a success like the reimagined Battlestar Galactica was.  If Syfy won’t take a chance on this, I think Netflix should!

4. The 4400 (USA, 2004-2007)

Originally a USA mini-series, The 4400 rated well enough that it was brought back as a full series.  It followed two government agents assigned to investigate the reappearance of a group of 4400 missing people who suddenly reappear all at once.  These people are soon found to have an extra neurotransmitter in their brains called “promicin” giving them each unique and extraordinary abilities.  It was a very creative show that unfortunately fell victim to the writer’s strike years ago.  If you have seen Heroes, you’ll notice how much The 4400 influenced it. Unfortunately, the final episode ended with a major cliffhanger that angered quite a few fans.  Several novels have been released since, giving fans some sort of closure, but I’d much prefer a final season or even a movie to end it right.

5. Threshold (CBS, 2005-2006)

I always get a lot of flak for this one but whatever.  Though this show is not well known, Threshold  was my favorite show when it aired years ago.  It starred Carla Cugino, Star Trek alum Brent Spiner and everyone’s favorite imp, Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones).   It followed Cugino’s character, a contingency analyst called into action after our first contact with a UFO.  The show was a whole new take on the classic alien invasion, featuring a virus that infects a human and makes them a slave to alien directives to infect others.  It lasted only 13 episodes and there were plans for a three year run – where the name would change after each season from Threshold to Foothold to Stranglehold – signifying each stage in their defense plan as the infection spreads worldwide.  If you want a short, quality series to marathon, I suggest checking out Threshold.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Caprica
  • Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
  • Star Trek Enterprise/ a new Trek series
  • Dollhouse
  • Stargate Atlantis (there’s still more story to tell)
I’d love to hear what you think about these shows and what your own top five is in the comments section below.

I’ve been following the business of TV (ratings and so on) for several years now and have gotten fairly good at predicting renewals vs cancellations.  Below are my predictions for all the sci-fi and fantasy shows on the 5 major American networks.

FOX:

-Fringe: renewed for a fifth and final season of 13 episodes!

- Touch: ratings aren’t great but I think it will get one more season, even an extra short one

- Alcatraz: will be cancelled.

- Terra Nova: already cancelled.  Netflix talks fell through as well.

NBC:

- Awake: Ratings are VERY low, even for NBC’s standards.  The show is great but I’d be surprised if it got one more season.  Fingers crossed though!

-Grimm: Already renewed for a second season.  Seems to be doing very well on Fridays.

CW:

- Supernatural: Renewed for an 8th season

- Nikita: Doesnt look good.  Most likely cancelled.

- Vampire Diaries: Renewed.

CBS:

- Persons of Interest: Already renewed for a second season.  Haven’t watched this but I’ve heard great things.  Glad to see a sci-fi show actually getting good ratings!

ABC:

- The River: Will be cancelled.  Netflix was in talks to pick this up but its VERY doubtful.

- Once Upon A Time: Will be renewed for sure.

What do you think?  Comment below!

There is also www.topcashback.co.uk who are currently offering £9.09. Folks might like to know that these sites offer cashback on loads of stuff including insurance, mobile phone contacts etc.. I have personally received over £1000 in cash back in the last year or so.

Anyone know of a US voucher site???

Netflix has been making headlines lately with talks of reviving many cancelled shows.  Besides the confirmed fourth season of FOX’s much loved sitcom, Arrested Development, they have had talks to save both ABC’s The River and FOX’s Terra Nova, though both are not going to happen.  Now the short lived drama Jericho that aired on CBS for 2 seasons is next on their wish list!

News leaked today that they are in discussions with CBS about a potential third season for the post-apocalyptic cult-favorite, just days after news of another Jericho comic series in the works (a season 3 graphic novel was released last summer)!  It will be interesting to see how the comics’ continuity will be factored into the show if it does indeed return.

Starring Skeet Ulrich and Lennie James, the series followed the residents of a small town in Kansas pulling together to survive after the US is nuked, having to defend themselves from rival towns, gangs of mercenaries and the new government that has risen to power.

Jericho is not new to revival rumors, having already survived cancellation once after low ratings in Season 1.  Fans rallied, sending tons of nuts to CBS headquarters in hopes of a final season.  Their prayers were answered when a short, 7 episode season 2 was announced though sadly, it’s ratings were not enough to keep it on the air.

Personally, I would love to see Jericho resurrected.  I marathoned the series last summer under the advice of a friend and though it started off slow, I quickly began to see why fans were so upset with its (second) cancellation.  It’s acting, writing and overall story was excellent and seemed to get better and better as I watched.  Though I don’t need another reason to subscribe to Netflix with them already bringing back Arrested Development, it seems like a bold business move.  Serialized shows like Jericho and the also short-lived Stargate Universe just don’t do all that well on TV anymore and Netflix’s business model seems perfect for it.

I highly recommend catching up on Jericho, either through buying the DVDs or streaming on Netflix.  It’s a great show!
