Remember the independent Star Trek shows I posted about the other day?  Well, one of them, Star Trek: Cardinal, is being pitched by its creator, Sal Lagonia, to CBS tomorrow!  If you would like to show support, share and Like them on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/StarTrekCardinal!  You can also check out the Star Trek Cardinal website here: http://startrekcardinal.com.

Good luck Sal, we’re all rooting for you!

Here is a synopses of the show from their website:

In every great nation there is a moment – A period of time that tests the character of its populace, and from that test an empire is ready to be born or die at birth; To be a force of change, whether for good or ill, or to dissolve into irrelevance.

So too is it with great men, that a point will come in their lives when they can decide to be a powerful force to shape the universe in their image or to join the ranks of mediocrity.

Captain Michael Winters has had the unique opportunity to visit this point more than once in his life. The first time he tugged harshly at his bootstraps and became the hero many knew he could be. But over time, that idealism faded, and his second time around was not filled with the motivation of the first. The good man who had risen from the ashes once had now fallen, and as time went on he had accepted mediocrity.

It was to this Captain Winters that the unique and mysterious USS Cardinal was given. A small cutter, a relic of an older age. Launched in a more optimistic time, a hybrid of different technologies, and sporting an experimental engine that was as spectacular as it was dangerous, the ship was heralded as the dawning of a new age, and its launching was considered a chance to rescue its program from the public relations nightmare that had plagued it after cost-overruns, work stoppages and failures integrating components had turned the public against its grand new program.

Staffed with a celebrity crew and covered by the state media, Cardinal had been given its moment to shine amid much fanfare, and by the time that moment was over, its crew was dead, its engine in ruins and its main engineer Letus disgraced.

Letus had spent the night imploring Starfleet to put an experienced crew on his vessel, but he had been over-ruled. Starfleet’s hubris had led to the death of a dozen people, and Cardinal had to take the blame.

In mothballs for twenty years, Cardinal was dragged out of storage by a Starfleet strapped for vessels in an expanding galaxy, and in a fitting move, was paired with its other fallen star, and staffed by those who had nowhere else to go.

But Cardinal’s first mission – A simple investigation with little perceived danger – May be its second chance… And this time, the stakes have been raised. For failure means not only the loss of one man’s passion… But the loss of the entire Federation.

I really hope something comes of this, even if it can’t start until after the second JJ Abrams Trek film next year.  We need more space-based sci-fi on TV!  Since Syfy cancelled Stargate Universe prematurely, the best we’ve seen was Archer’s season 3 finale.

About these ads

I’ve been following the business of TV (ratings and so on) for several years now and have gotten fairly good at predicting renewals vs cancellations.  Below are my predictions for all the sci-fi and fantasy shows on the 5 major American networks.

FOX:

-Fringe: renewed for a fifth and final season of 13 episodes!

- Touch: ratings aren’t great but I think it will get one more season, even an extra short one

- Alcatraz: will be cancelled.

- Terra Nova: already cancelled.  Netflix talks fell through as well.

NBC:

- Awake: Ratings are VERY low, even for NBC’s standards.  The show is great but I’d be surprised if it got one more season.  Fingers crossed though!

-Grimm: Already renewed for a second season.  Seems to be doing very well on Fridays.

CW:

- Supernatural: Renewed for an 8th season

- Nikita: Doesnt look good.  Most likely cancelled.

- Vampire Diaries: Renewed.

CBS:

- Persons of Interest: Already renewed for a second season.  Haven’t watched this but I’ve heard great things.  Glad to see a sci-fi show actually getting good ratings!

ABC:

- The River: Will be cancelled.  Netflix was in talks to pick this up but its VERY doubtful.

- Once Upon A Time: Will be renewed for sure.

What do you think?  Comment below!

Netflix has been making headlines lately with talks of reviving many cancelled shows.  Besides the confirmed fourth season of FOX’s much loved sitcom, Arrested Development, they have had talks to save both ABC’s The River and FOX’s Terra Nova, though both are not going to happen.  Now the short lived drama Jericho that aired on CBS for 2 seasons is next on their wish list!

News leaked today that they are in discussions with CBS about a potential third season for the post-apocalyptic cult-favorite, just days after news of another Jericho comic series in the works (a season 3 graphic novel was released last summer)!  It will be interesting to see how the comics’ continuity will be factored into the show if it does indeed return.

Starring Skeet Ulrich and Lennie James, the series followed the residents of a small town in Kansas pulling together to survive after the US is nuked, having to defend themselves from rival towns, gangs of mercenaries and the new government that has risen to power.

Jericho is not new to revival rumors, having already survived cancellation once after low ratings in Season 1.  Fans rallied, sending tons of nuts to CBS headquarters in hopes of a final season.  Their prayers were answered when a short, 7 episode season 2 was announced though sadly, it’s ratings were not enough to keep it on the air.

Personally, I would love to see Jericho resurrected.  I marathoned the series last summer under the advice of a friend and though it started off slow, I quickly began to see why fans were so upset with its (second) cancellation.  It’s acting, writing and overall story was excellent and seemed to get better and better as I watched.  Though I don’t need another reason to subscribe to Netflix with them already bringing back Arrested Development, it seems like a bold business move.  Serialized shows like Jericho and the also short-lived Stargate Universe just don’t do all that well on TV anymore and Netflix’s business model seems perfect for it.

I highly recommend catching up on Jericho, either through buying the DVDs or streaming on Netflix.  It’s a great show!
